When you're on a road trip have you ever been pulled over by a cop?

im about to go on my first road trip from ny to florida i wanna know if in some point of my roadtrip i got pulled over by a...lets say a virginia or georgia state trooper, do i need to pay the fine right there and then or just mail it as soon as i get back home to NY?
