Is there an animal-friendly spray to use to protect pumpkins you display in front of your house?thks.?

Last year, our pumpkins were chewed open by whatever animals are in the neighborhood (squirrles, raccoons, etc.), after only a couple of days, and we figured it would only happen again if we buy more pumpkins. So, I'd like to find a spray or something that will deter the animals without hurting them. Thanks.
