Is this a half-decent attempt at the opening of my novel?

It sounds very captivating. It gives enough details about the ins' guild without giving too much away. It definitely makes me want to read more and learn more about the guild and people in it. I especially like the way you describe the city. I can totally picture it in my head. I'm working on a novel, too, by the way. Good luck with yours!
